smocking
Smocking is a traditional embroidery practice where parallel running stitches are used to form pleats in the fabric. The embroidery is done on top of the pleats, and the running stitches are removed once the design is complete. I do this art sometimes completely by hand, sometimes with the aid of a pleater machine that my grandmother gave me.
quilting
I aim to reduce fabric waste as much as possible with my piecework in quilting. I often use fabric remnants, cut up into as many 5x5 squares as I can and pieces together, using the rest of the scraps for more detailed designs or binding. For batting, I use locally sourced wool. I have bags of fleeces stuffed underneath my bed. Once the quilt top, batting, and lining are all stitched together, I bind the edges and finish the piece.
dyeing
I love natural dyes, and I've been exploring the dyes available in the environment surrounding me, including those found in redwood bark, beard lichen, shield lichen, blackberry, and more.
